Changes within this service release include:

NEW: Processing of incoming delivery status notifications (including non-delivery reports) by anti-spam filters enabled by default on a clean install

NEW: Keyword Checking, Bayesian, DNSRBL and SURBL will scan embedded emails within non-delivery reports for spam

NEW: NewSenders option for blocking NDR Spam (Backscatter email) which is enabled by default. This new feature checks if the original email of the non-delivery report was actually sent through GFI MailEssentials.
How does the GFI MailEssentials Spam URI Realtime Blocklists filter work?

The GFI MailEssentials Spam URI Realtime Blocklist (SURBL) filter verifies that the Unified Resource Identifiers (URIs) found in the email are not known to be used in spam emails. The GFI MailEssentials SURBL filter performs DNS queries to the Spam URI Realtime Blocklists enabled in GFI MailEssentials, using the URIs found in the email message body.

SURBL requirements:

All the queries done by the SURBL filter are done using DNS. By default, GFI MailEssentials will perform the DNS queries against the DNS server configured on the local machine. You can configure GFI MailEssentials perform such DNS queries using an alternate DNS server. This can be done as follows:

From the GFI MailEssentials configuration, right click on the Anti-Spam' node.

Select Properties' -> DNS Server' tab.

Select Use the following DNS Server'.

Specify the DNS server to use.

GFI MailEssentials does not process emails when installed on the same machine as Gene6 FTP Server

Issue encountered:

Emails are not being processed by GFI MailEssentials. The GFI MailEssentials monitor displays Item Processed Unsuccessful for all the emails processed.

Gene6 FTP Server is also running on the same machine as GFI MailEssentials

More information:

Gene6 FTP Server allows the administrator to configure the ftp server remotely. In order to do this, the Gene6 FTP Server configuration console connects to server on port 8021 when reading the configuration.

The same port is also used by GFI MailEssentials for inter-process communication.

Solution:

Please change the port number used by Gene6 FTP Server. This can be done from the Gene6 FTP Server Administrator -> connect to the FTP server -> Administration -> Properties -> Secure node -> IP binding.

Remember also to change the settings of the connect
