GFI MailSecurity 10 AVG virus scanning engine issue

**Important notification for GFI MailSecurity 10 customers**

The GFI MailSecurity optional AVG anti-virus engine makes use of specific files which need to be updated periodically. These files are included with the updates for the AVG Virus Scanning Engine. If the AVG engine is enabled and the AVG files are not updated before June 2011, GFI MailSecurity 10 will no longer load the AVG virus scanning engine. This will cause the scanning of all emails to be delivered to the GFI FailedMails folder and emails will not be delivered to end-users. There will be no data loss.

Information on how to prevent this from happening is provided below.

Who is affected?

All GFI MailSecurity 10 customers, including customers who did not opt to purchase the AVG engine updates, can potentially be affected by this problem.

GFI MailSecurity 2011 is not affected by th

Does GFI MailSecurity support Windows 2008?

Yes, Windows 2008 is supported, however you will need to add theGFI MailSecurity scanning engine executable (GFiScanM.exe) and the Kaspersky virus scanning engine executable (kavss.exe) to the Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) exception list.

There are two ways to enter the GFI executables in the DEP exception list; Automatically or Manually.

Automatically:

When the GFI MailSecurity machine is restarted, pop up windows will inform the console operator that the above mentioned executables are possibly malicious executables and will ask the user if he wishes to add the executable to Exception list'. If the operator chooses to add the executable to the exception list, the DEP configuration will be opened directly and the executable will be already in the list. The user only needs to accept the configuration.

Manually:

 Go to Start -> Control

Can I run GFI MailEssentials and GFI MailSecurity on Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS)?

You can install both products on Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 / 2008 / 2011. However in view of the fact that Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) may require a large amount of RAM when all the Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) components are installed, make sure there is theminimum required amountof RAM available for MailEssentials in such situations.

To avoid loading your Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS)server you might want to install the GFI products on a separate Windows 2003 Server or higher to act as a Gateway.

NOTE: Microsoft SBS 2011 is supported from GFI MailEssentials 2010 SR2 and later only.

GFI MailSecurity 2011 has now been released and offers the following new features and improvements:

AVG LinkScanner:For those using the optional AVG antivirus engine with GFI MailSecurity, this new scanning technology analyzes hyperlinks in email bodies to determine whether they point to malicious content. Additionally, AVG LinkScanner can also be configured to scan the links' destination pages.

Norman AV Sandbox: It is well-known that the best way to detect the most recent malware, for which definitions have yet to be released, is to run it in a sandbox. GFI MailSecurity 2011 now features Norman Sandbox, a technology which uses an emulated environment to analyze the behavior of suspicious files in cases where signature-based analysis falls short.

Full scans of internal emails: GFI MailSecurity 2011 now performs full scanning for internal emails. For example, attachment-filter

Problems with updates for the Norman anti-virus engine in builds of GFI MailSecurity 10.x prior to build 20090409

On September 7, 2010, an update to the Norman anti-virus engine was released which will cause older builds of GFI MailSecurity 10.x (build 20080614 and older) to fail to perform automatic updates to the Norman anti-virus engine.

What versions of GFI MailSecurity are affected?

GFI MailSecurity version 10 customers running the product builds released before April 2009 which are listed below are known to be affected by this issue.

20070619

20071129

20080324

20080404

Newer builds of GFI MailSecurity are not affected since GFI MailSecurity 10 build 20090409 and above includes a feature called Engine Recovery Procedure (ERP) which allows GFI MailSecurity to automatically recover from similar issues where an anti-virus engine enters a non-updatable state.

How can I verify if I am affected?
