How can I get the connection string for MS SQL / ADO checks in GFI Network Server Monitor?

GFI Network Server Monitor may be used to check the availability of a database.

In order to create such a check, a connection string is required. The connection string contains information about the location of the database, the type of database, and other information which may be required to access the database such as the user name and password.

You can find information on how to create the connection string at: http://www.connectionstrings.com.

Alternatively you can use a Data Link file to construct the connection string for the most common databases. Proceed as follows:

Create a New Text Document. (The location is not important).

 Rename the file to test.udl'.

 Double click the test.udl'.

From the Data link properties' dialog box, change to the Provider' tab.

Select the Provider that will be used to connec

Changing the SSH port GFI Network Server Monitor connects to

Issue Encountered:

You want to monitor a LinuxUnix machine, however the SSH daemon is not running on the default TCP port (Port 22).

SSH checks to the machine are resulting in a time out. The error that is shown in this case is:

Error connecting to SSH: 10061(No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it)

Solution:

GFI Network Server Monitor will attempt to connect on the default SSH port port 22 by default. The port used by GFI Network Server Monitor needs to be changed as follows:

Close the GFI Network Server Monitor configuration.

Stop the GFI Network Server Monitor server service.

On the GFI Network Server Monitor machine, browse to the GFI Network Server Monitor data folder. (By default: C:Program FilesGFINetwork Server Monitor 7Data).

Error when monitoring Microsoft ISA server machines: Processing Error

Issue Encountered:

When trying to configure checks to monitor the server running Microsoft ISA server, one of the following errors may be displayed:

Processing Error: Function <function name> returned UNKNOWN

Or

Failed: Unable to access <machine name>. Possible reasons: No WMI installed on the remote server, no rights to access remote WMI service, or remote server down.

Solution:

This issue will occur if the monitoring check makes use of WMI. Examples of such checks are the ISA Server Monitoring and the Disk Monitoring checks. In this case, the Microsoft ISA server System Policy needs to be configured so as not to Enforce strict RPC compliance' in order to allow the connections performed by the monitoring checks. This can be done as shown below:

Open the Microsoft ISA Server Management.

 Select the <servername> ->

Enabling and configuring SNMP on a Windows machine

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application-layer protocol. SNMP can help network administrators manage network performance, find and solve network problems, and plan for network growth more easily.

On Microsoft Windows, the SNMP service can be enabled and configured .When this is done, you will be allowed to retrieve information from the Microsoft Windows OS via SNMP. Proceed as follows:

Install the SNMP service from the Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components -> Management and Monitor Tools -> Details -> Simple Network Management Protocol.

Once the service is installed, open the 'Services' panel and locate the 'SNMP Service'.

Double click on the SNMP Service' to open the properties.

 Select the Security' tab.

In the 'Accepted Community Names' list, add a new community, for example: 'Public' community with READ ONLY'right

Verifying that a script to be used by GFI Network Server Monitor works as expected

Issue Encountered:

You have developed your own script, and would like to verify that that it works before using it in GFI Network Server Monitor.

Alternatively, GFI Network Server Monitor is not returning the expected results for specific checks. A check may also be failing and claiming that WMI is required for the check to work. WMI is installed however the check still fails.

More Information:

You can check that a script works as expected by executing the script manually.

The following procedure describes how to retrieve a script from GFI Network Server Monitor and execute it manually. As an example we will use the CPU usage function which makes use of WMI to retrieve the CPU utilization on a machine.

Proceed as follows:

Open the GFI Network Server Monitor Scripts' folder. (By default this will be located at: C:Program FilesGFINetwork Server Monitor 7S
